DAVID VON PEIN SAID:

Oswald probably realized that if he had taken a shot while the limousine was on Houston Street, all of the Secret Service men and motorcycle officers would have been facing the TSBD window, and as such, with just a tilt of their heads, Oswald could have been easily observed firing the fatal shots, and return gunfire by the authorities could possibly have been accomplished very rapidly.

But by waiting until the President's car turned onto Elm Street, Oswald knew that most of the armed security people surrounding JFK (policemen and SS agents) would have their backs to the assassin and would not have their eyes focused in Oswald's direction at all, thus making quick return fire much more difficult and awkward.

Plus, waiting until the cars were on Elm had another advantage for Oswald too --- that being: there was literally no escape route for the President. No side streets to veer off to. The limo was forced to keep moving straight ahead toward the Underpass, thus keeping the President in Oswald's sights for even a longer period of time.

If the shooting had begun on Houston Street, limo driver Bill Greer had the option of proceeding straight ahead on Houston and out of the line of direct fire coming from the south-side Depository windows.

Therefore, when weighing the various options as to when to start shooting at President Kennedy with a rifle from the Book Depository Building (in order to maximize the assassin's chances for success), it seems to me that Lee Oswald's decision to wait until the cars had turned onto Elm Street was by far the best choice.

JOHN SIMKIN SAID THIS.

DAVID VON PEIN SAID:

John,

In addition to the 1967 John Connally quote you provided in your previous post, a very important quote of Connally's from that very same CBS-TV interview is this one:

"The only way that I could ever reconcile my memory of what happened and what occurred, with respect to the One-Bullet Theory is .... it HAD to be the SECOND bullet that might have hit us both."

Watch Governor Connally utter those words in the cued-up video linked here:

BILL BROWN SAID:

Ruth Paine passed away Sunday evening [8/31/2025].
Her son Chris sent me an email early this morning.

DAVID VON PEIN SAID:

I was very much saddened by the news that Ruth Paine had passed away on August 31st, 2025, just three days before her 93rd birthday.

Among all the people who have ever been associated in some way with the events of November 1963, I liked and admired Ruth the most.

In her many interviews and public appearances since '63 (several of which can be found at the link below), Ruth always seemed very genuine and honest and forthright. I will miss her.

DAVID VON PEIN SAID:

Amen!

--------------------

"The theories about Ruth Paine are pure mush (and poppycock). They prove nothing. And they certainly don't come close to proving (or really even strongly SUGGESTING) that Mrs. Ruth Paine would have had any motive for wanting to frame Lee Harvey Oswald. The whole idea about the Paines being conspirators has been created out of nothing but sheer speculation--built on a foundation that cannot support any of it.

None of that crap that James DiEugenio wrote in his forum post on this page [in April 2013] comes even close to showing Ruth Paine (or Michael Paine) had anything to do with a conspiracy to murder John Kennedy and/or frame Lee Oswald for that murder.

DiEugenio's pathetic attempts to trash Mrs. Paine are sickening. I only wish I could persuade Ruth to start a slander lawsuit. She'd win, hands down. Does anybody have Ruth's phone number? Maybe I'll give her a call."

DENNY ZARTMAN SAID THIS.

DAVID VON PEIN SAID:

It becomes much easier to turn your back on someone when the evidence of that person's guilt in two murders is so blatantly obvious.
